Our science teachers are please to announce that Cornerstone has a science lab!  The hard work of the PTA and generosity of our parents raised more than $22,000 last year for science equipment and supplies.  After what seemed like a summer long ordering frenzy, more than $12,000 has been spent on science materials.  A downstairs room is now set up as a science lab.  Chemical-guard tables and a microscope cabinet/demonstration table are now in place.  Some of the other equipment purchased includes a lab refrigerator, an in\cubator, safety equipment, additional microscopes, balances, glassware, prepared slides, spectroscopes and kits to study everything from enzymes, viruses and nutrition to land forms, atomic structure and properties of liquids and gases.

The remaining money has been primarily earmarked for two exciting projects that are still in the works, a GLOBE weather station and a physics simple machines lab.  The GLOBE Program is an opportunity for students to track weather information for our area and relay this information to a team of scientists.  The information given allows them to identify and track climatic changes.  When our weather station is up and running, the students will be involved in monitoring changes that take place around the world by measuring precipitation, temperature, cloud cover and cloud type.

Later, we hope to expand our program to also include tracking changes in water and ground cover as well.  The students will be able to take satisfaction in knowing that they are gaining knowledge and skills to make choices that will determine what kind of world we will leave for future generations.

The simple machines lab will be one of a kind in SBISD.  Plans include the building of large levers, pulleys and inclined planes so Cornerstone students can experience, first-hand, the differences between various types of levers and pulleys and the benefits of simple machines in our lives.
